I have wanted a 2" X 72" belt grinder for years, but didn't want to spend several thousand to buy one. I TIG welded everything, but the designer of the unit provides a video showing him building it all with a MIG welder.

I wanted to build a 2"x72" belt grinder to use to make a few knives. I viewed many videos on YouTube how a treadmill motor was used and how it was wired with a speed control purchased off Ebay. I got the unit all put together and started grinding a bevel on a knife blank. It lasted about 3 minutes and the grinder quit.
Belt grinder build, part 1 I wanted to experiment with building a belt grinder. But not having experience with one, I wasn't sure if it was something I had much use for, so I didn't want to build a typical belt grinder design such as Jeremy Schmid's, John Heisz's, Cosmas 's, or this one .
As for the cost savings, light-duty grinders/belt sanders show up on craigslist and yard sales fairly regularly at a reasonable cost. I have two 1"x42" sanders I picked up for $25 each. I also picked up a 4"x48" edge sander for $100. The heavy-duty 6"x48" units come along less frequently, but There are two for sale locally just now.
