I started with a jig flat grinding for a couple blades. Then I did a couple with a jig hollow ground on my 12" wheel for a few. Then I went to freehand on my 8" wheel with workrest and now I do everything completely freehand bellied up on my 12" wheel. Starting with a jig completely sped up my learning curve.
