The Motor Mill Historic District is nationally recognized, and the mill itself is part of the historic Motor Townsite that surrounds it. This historic site dates back to the 1860s and was a mining district. It included a gristmill, a bridge across the Turkey River, smokehouse, Inn, livery barn, houses, a general store, a school, and more.
